Tomé brings finance, operations and transformation experience to one of the world’s most consequential delivery networks.

Early life and education

Carol Louise Tomé, born Carol Buchenroth on January 8, 1957, is a native of Jackson, Wyoming. Public corporate biographies focus on her education and executive career rather than identifying her parents, so Mogulry does not fill that gap with unverified information. She studied communication at the University of Wyoming and earned an MBA in finance from the University of Denver.

Her education and early interests positioned her for a career in finance and operations. That combination—understanding capital decisions while staying close to how a company serves customers—became central to her later work at two large American businesses.

Companies, holdings and ventures

Tomé is a career executive, not the founder or sole owner of a portfolio of companies. Her long corporate career was built at The Home Depot, where she became chief financial officer and helped lead a major period of operational and financial transformation. She joined the UPS board in 2003.

In 2020, Tomé became UPS CEO. Her responsibility is the global delivery and supply-chain company itself, including logistics, workforce, technology investment and specialized services. She also serves on Verizon’s board, but her signature operating role remains UPS.

The logistics view

Carol Tomé has been Chief Executive Officer of UPS since 2020 and has served on its board since 2003. She leads a company whose work sits behind a huge share of global commerce: moving packages, managing supply chains and helping businesses reach customers across more than 200 countries and territories.

That makes logistics an especially revealing category. Customers see the delivery, but the business depends on routing, facilities, labor, data, vehicle fleets, technology and a constant flow of decisions about capacity.

A strategy built around focus

At UPS, Tomé has advanced a Customer First, People Led, Innovation Driven strategy. The emphasis is on reinforcing the network, serving attractive segments and using digital and automated tools to improve service and efficiency. Healthcare logistics is one example of the specialized work where capability and reliability matter as much as speed.

Before UPS, Tomé spent nearly two decades as chief financial officer of The Home Depot. Her background connects capital discipline with a practical understanding of large, complex operations.

The leadership lesson

Tomé’s work illustrates how leaders can reshape an established company by becoming more precise about which customers, capabilities and investments deserve the greatest attention.
